What is the Mebane Early Literacy Scholars Program?

The Mebane Early Literacy Scholars Program holds the spotlight in the teacher development pillar of the Mebane Early Literacy Center. By providing Mebane Scholars with enrichment opportunities to extend pre-service teaching, learning, and leadership experiences in literacy education, teacher candidates are more prepared as they begin their teaching career. 

Who are Mebane Scholars?

Mebane Scholars are undergraduate students who are: 

  • Teacher candidates from the Cato College of Education, 
  • Enrolled in elementary education, special education, or dual programs, and 
  • Accepted into the Mebane Early Literacy Scholars program.

What does it mean to be a Mebane Scholar?

Mebane Scholars are trained in literacy practices aligned to the science of reading, provided extensive support and enrichment opportunities to refine their teaching skills, and highly sought after upon graduation. Mebane Scholars are awarded compensation, engage in hands-on experiences, and participate professional learning

Compensation

  • Mebane Scholars receive $4,000 per semester in scholarship money for junior and senior years
  • Scholars can earn up to $16,000 across two years

Hands on Experience

  • Gain teaching experience in K-5 settings including classrooms and after school tutoring programs
  • Receive on-site mentoring from K-5 classroom teachers and university faculty
  • Engage in paid experiences in professional settings including summer camps sponsored by the university and community partners (application process required)

Professional Learning

  • Participate in training of evidence-based practices aligned to the science of reading
  • Collaborate with members of a Professional Learning Community (PLC) during bimonthly meetings
  • Attend and plan community engagement events focused on literacy education, such as collaborative planning and hosting of family literacy nights in local schools, planning and facilitating screenings of documentaries related to literacy education, and presenting at Mebane Early Literacy Center sponsored events
  • Join the Reading League – North Carolina with paid membership from the Mebane Early Literacy Center
